SACRAMENTO, CA.

Visit the Sacramento Zoo’s newest baby July 12th as he explores the exhibit for the first time!  The Sacramento Zoo is pleased to announce its newest arrival—one male Black & white ruffed lemur—born to 8-yr old parents. This is the second set of offspring for this pair. The mother is taking exceptional care of her infant which has not yet been named. The three lemurs born last year and the father remain in the exhibit.

The infant was found in the “nest” on the morning of May 16th.  Two lemurs were born, but the other male died shortly after birth of natural causes. High infant mortality is not uncommon in this species. Although ruffed lemurs are capable of having up to six infants at a time, typically two or three youngsters (weighing about 100 grams each) are born.

BIG THINGS ARE COMING YOUR WAY…. Yes, a portion of the pathway along the west side of the Zoo will be closed for about two years. However, we assure you that it will be worth it! Why two years, you might ask? Well, constructing a 10,000 square foot South American rainforest in Indiana is a complex process! For close to three years, Zoo staff and Zoo architects have been perfecting plans for AMAZONIA. Now it’s time to break ground! However, building a state of the art rainforest exhibit isn’t your standard construction project. Here are a few things we’ll be up to for the next two years as we create a rainforest in the Midwest:

The Saint Louis Zoo has educated, entertained and earned a place in the hearts of St. Louisans for generations. With the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, there began a long and slow process to establish a zoological park. Sure enough, local pride in the giant elliptical bird cage led to formation of a St. Louis Zoological Society in 1910. The City of St. Louis set aside 77 acres in Forest Park for a zoo and named a Zoological Board of Control in 1913. State legislation provided that "the zoo shall be forever free," which has kept the Zoo accessible to millions of visitors ever since.

ROCHESTER, NY.

Seneca Park is one of the Rochester area's parks that were designed by the landscape architecture firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. The park opened in 1893 and animals were first displayed here a year later. The zoo originally featured different species of deer and some birds, and had an outdoor aviary next to the trout pond in the lower park. During part of the year, some of these animals were displayed in Durand Eastman Park. 1931 saw the first major addition to the zoo, when the main zoo building was completed. It featured a wide variety of exotic animals that hadn't been displayed at the zoo before. One of the most famous residents of that building was Jimmy the Chimp, who, at the time of his death at age 55 on September 17, 1985, was the oldest chimpanzee in captivity. When first opened, this building was true to the menagerie style of most zoos of the time, featuring dozens of unrelated species in a fairly compact space. In 1957, the Seneca Park Zoo Society was chartered as an educational institution by New York State. Since that time, the Society has evolved into a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the zoo by running educational programs, special events, marketing and public relations efforts, fund raising, and food and gift operations. The Society offers memberships that are very popular with area families. The next major improvement to the zoo was opened in the early 1970's and provided a polar bear grotto, which was a great improvement for the zoo's two famous polar bears, Penny and Nickels. As their names suggest, Penny and Nickels were brought to the zoo through the pennies and nickels collected by the area's schoolchildren. There had been no other major physical improvements to the zoo until 1993, when the Genesee Trail and Discovery Center opened. This exhibit was the first phase of the development plan funded by the Seneca Park Zoo Society and adopted by the Monroe County Legislature in 1991. The new exhibit was the first of the natural habitat, landscape immersion exhibits at the zoo. These exhibits are the future of zoos, and help the visitor see what the animals are like in homes reflecting their native ones in the wild. This exhibit was built with $2 million dollars of Society-raised funds and $500,000 of County funds. The Rocky Coasts exhibit, opened in 1997, was built with $7.75 million in County funds and $450,000 in Society-raised funds. This state of the art facility provides many of the zoo's animals with more spacious natural homes, and the zoo's visitors with an incredible experience of seeing the polar bears and sea lions under water. The zoo's attendance reached a record-breaking 506,660 in 1997; demonstrating the strong interest in the zoo of local residents.

History of the Nature Center

Henrietta and the Zoo

Many long time Asheville residents have memories of the "old zoo", which had been here since the Great Depression. The old zoo housed exotic animals including elephants, lions, and monkeys. But because of financial hardships, the old zoo was forced to sell or give most of the animals to other zoos. Henrietta, the elephant, was cared for at the Center until the end of her life, and buried on the Center grounds.

Located about 75 miles west of Raleigh in Asheboro, N.C. Zoo is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s finest zoos. It was the first American zoo designed from its inception around the "natural habitat" philosophy--presenting animals and plants in exhibits that closely resemble the habitats in which they would be found in the wild.

Among the most popular exhibits are those that display polar bear, sea lions, river otters, alligators, elephants, gorillas, baboons, rhinoceros, giraffes, and zebras. The 37-acre Watani Grasslands Reserve exhibit alone is as large a many entire zoos.

The 11-acre Prairie exhibit in the North American region showcases the zoo’s collection of bison and elk. The Sonora Desert, an indoor recreation of the famous desert of the American Southwest, is alive with roadrunners, rattlesnakes, gila monsters, tarantulas and many more fascinating denizens of that hot, dry climate. This was the nation’s first state-supported zoo and remains one of only two state zoos, the other located in Minnesota.

Come. Sea. Discover the amazing underwater world of the Texas State Aquarium. Travel an aquatic journey from the shore to the depths of the Gulf of Mexico and have the opportunity to experience dive shows, animal feedings, training sessions, and "hands on" programs with sharks and stingrays. Thousands of animals representing over 250 species, displayed in entertaining and educational exhibits, are ready to enchant, entertain and inspire you.

Every visit to the Texas State Aquarium is a new and exciting discovery of animals that remind us all of our responsibility to those whose world we share. Get up close and personal with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins from above and below the water in Dolphin Bay. Look to the skies as hawks, owls and falcons soar throughout the Hawn Wild Flight Theater. Visit the Islands of Steel exhibit, modeled after an offshore oil platform, where sharks and sea turtles live among schools of snapper, tarpon, redfish, jacks and grouper. Dare to enter the mysterious world of the Amazon rainforest and experience the exotic, the deadly and the fierce as you encounter poison-dart frogs, fresh-water stingrays and boa constrictors, and spend time in the Living Shores, where you can really get your hands wet! Watch as sea turtles gracefully glide in the waters of Tortuga Cay and see North American river otters play the day away in Otter Creek.

With so much to see and do, what are you waiting for?

MADISON, WI.

The Madison Zoological and Aquarium Society was organized in 1914, shortly after the zoo was founded. In 1926, the Society was reorganized as the Henry Vilas Park Zoological Society, which continues today. In 1964, the society was incorporated as a non-profit corporation. The society's purpose is to build community support and provide funding for zoo improvements. This includes the acquisition, conservation, and replacement of animals; refurbishing and creating new exhibits; supporting educational programs; and improving the overall educational and recreational value of the zoo. The Zoological Society contributes generously to the Zoo's operating budget.

The society has been instrumental in providing funding for many zoo improvements, generally in partnership with the County and City.

In recent years lots of exciting exhibits have popped up at the zoo. We added the Children's Zoo in 1980 and the new penguin exhibit in 1986. In 1992 the Discovery Center/Herpetarium opened, marking the zoo's first hands-on educational facility with space for indoor classes. Over the last eight years our ReZOOvenation project created the Discovering Primates Complex, Big Cat Complex and Visitor Center. The Zoo entrance, gift shop and concessions area have all been tastefully replaced. The last phase of ReZOOvenation was the Tropical Rain Forest Aviary, which opened to the public in June of 2003.
Come visit Henry Vilas Zoo, Madison WI, Free Admission, open every day of the year, 700 animals.
